- I've never ridden a scooter before. How does this work?
Riding a scooter is easy! Veo offers an Education Mode in the Veo app, which will reduce the maximum scooter speed and allow the rider to start slowly while getting used to the controls.
The right handlebar contains:
- Throttle (push with thumb)
- Rear brakes (pull with 2-3 fingers)
The left handlebar contains:
It's highly recommend to use the rear brakes when stopping the scooter. Do not use the front brakes by themselves; using the front brakes when trying to stop can cause the rider's forward momentum to pitch them over the handlebars.
When preparing to accelerate, the rider can use their foot to push the scooter forward. Gaining 1-2mph can create an easier transition to the acceleration speed.
Allow plenty of room to slow down and stop. This protects the rider and pedestrians from potential crashes.
- Where can I ride a scooter in Carbondale?
Scooters can be ridden anywhere bikes are allowed. Designated bike lanes and multi-use paths (such as Piles Fork Greenway and the Downtown Campus Bike Path) are ideal.
When those aren’t available, riders can ride in the street. Please stay as close as possible to the right-hand side of the road.
In the case that this option is deemed not possible or too dangerous, riders may ride on the sidewalk. Make sure to give any pedestrians present the right-of-way and ample warning of the scooter's presence.
On campus, scooters can be driven anywhere except for crosswalks. Please dismount scooters and walk them through any crosswalks.
Please see the Carbondale Bike Map for the locations of bikeways throughout town.
- How old do I need to be to ride a scooter?
According to Veo policy, riders need to be over 18 years old to ride a scooter.
Per the State of Illinois policy, riders need to hold a valid driver's license or learning permit.
- Where can I park the scooters?
There are 9-11 designated scooter parking areas throughout town. A parking area is the best place to park a scooter! If there is not a parking area close by, look for a bike rack and park the scooter close to it.
A scooter can be left in the city’s right-of-way out of the way of pedestrian walkways, traffic, accessible ramps, and entryways to buildings.
On campus, scooters can be parked on bike racks, designated parking areas, or away from high-traffic areas utilized by pedestrians.
Keep in mind that if scooters are continually left in the way of pedestrians, drivers, and others, the program could lose support from the community.
- Can I ride on Campus Lake Trail?
No; Campus Lake Trail is a no-ride zone for e-scooters, bicycles, and skateboards.
- What can I do if I see a scooter parked in an unsafe location or blocking access for others?
If you find a scooter parked unsafely or blocking access (such as a doorway or sidewalk), please take a picture of the scooter's QR code and the scooter as it is parked, and send it to
hello@veoride.com.
- Where can I find the city’s complete rules and regulations regarding bikes and micromobility?
SIU and Carbondale each have set rules, regulations, and policies for bicycle use. Please stay up to date on all policies for scooters in Carbondale and at SIU.
- What can we do to keep scooters in Carbondale and at SIU forever?
It’s easy! Just follow the rules, and encourage others to do the same.
